What is Brainwaves?

Brainwaves is an edutainment app designed to improve the critical thinking and problem solving abilities of neurodivergent individuals.

Brainwaves' standout feature is Wimmy the Whale, an AI companion. Wimmy offers the users unlimited support and feedback on the puzzles that they'll encounter throughout their learning journey.

I had the pleasure of working as the lead brand designer alongside a talented team of designers and developers as we brought Brainwaves to life.

Brand Identity

Brainwaves was created with the goal of bringing a new solution to an existing problem using AI. We wanted to give neurodivergent individuals a new way to learn, and as such, brand had to be trustworthy, and approachable.

Considering the mascot is a whale, we figured a blue ocean theme would was an appropriate representation of our brand.

For the logo, we took a literal approach to the word "Brainwaves" to ensure the brand stayed simple and recognizable, as well as leaning into the concept of training your brain. Of course, the tagline also plays into the branding, referring to our app as a vast ocean of knowledge.

Styleguide

This style guide was created with the goal of upholding Brainwaves' values of being trustworthy and fun to use. We selected the font beloved font Poppins, for it's versatility and friendly shape.

We had various shades of blue that were used throughout promotional graphics as well as within the mascot's design, but for our app, we simplified it down to a primary and secondary shade of blue. The reason we picked these two shades is they complement each other well on light and dark backgrounds which is an important accessibility concern that we wanted to achieve.

Of course, we have some neutral off-black tones to ensure the text-to-background contrast ratio created readable paragraphs without being too harsh. Finally, we included a tertiary gold tone which was occasionally used to highlight certain features within the app.

User Interfaces

Considering our target demographic, we wanted to ensure our app was accessible to a large range of ages and learning abilities. To accomplish this, we kept our interface simple and used a familiar, thumb-friendly layout.

The biggest challenge was trying to keep users engaged without being intrusive. Throughout the app, Wimmy the Whale pops up and gives users feedback and hints as they progress. We did many rounds of user testing until we struck the perfect balance of helpful feedback and unintrusive popups.

On top of all that, there are also a variety of accessibility options including a dyslexia-friendly font, dark mode, and colourblind mode to ensure Brainwaves can be enjoyed by all.
